AI podcasts are on the rise. Should legacy podcasters pack up and go home? We explore some facets of the emerging world of AI podcasts in this special paid-subscribers-only episode of Based Camp.
TL:DL: Tools like Notebook LLM are awesome in that they enable the memetic version of adding, say, vitamin D to calcium supplements to make the calcium actively absorbable. Resources like the Alexa+ podcast generation feature are awesome when you have kids around and you’d like to generate mini lectures or lessons for them. That said, we need to parse out the various things that podcasts provide, like information, parasocial relationships, distraction, and community, and acknowledge where humans versus LLMs have strengths.
What are your thoughts? Are you an AI podcast listener? Do you generate your own or listen to AI podcasts generated by others? Let us know in the comments, and as always, feel very welcome to share episode ideas, suggestions, and feedback!
Show Notes
Amazon recently announced “Alexa Podcasts” with a promise that Alexa+ subscribers will get podcast-style episodes on virtually any topic you ask about.
This is just the latest threat to hit them, with the first major threat being Google’s Notebook LLM, which provides audio overviews of uploaded documents.

Alexa+ AI “Podcasts” (Topic-Based)
In mid‑May 2026, Amazon announced “Alexa Podcasts,” a new Alexa+ feature that generates podcast-style episodes on virtually any topic you ask about.
You just tell Alexa+ what you’re curious about; it then proposes an outline, lets you adjust length and focus, and generates an episode with AI host voices in a few minutes.
The system pulls from more than 200 news outlets and other sources (AP, Reuters, Washington Post, Time, Politico, Vox, USA Today, and many local papers) to keep content current and reasonably high quality.
I tested this and it mostly works, though like with many things in the Alexa app, it is buggy
The podcast apparently finished, but when I clicked on it in my app I got a blank screen and then I couldn’t find it
Other things are also imperfect: Dropping in is weird and it often crashes
It seems more like an audio playback of an LLM response than a podcast per se; they’re reaching by calling them “podcasts”
Availability of Alexa Podcasts
Alexa Podcasts is already available in the U.S., but only for users who have access to Alexa+ (included with Prime or about 19.99 per month for non‑Prime users, per Amazon’s own and secondary reporting).
Episodes can be listened to on Echo devices (including Echo Show) and in the Alexa app, and users get a notification when a new AI‑generated episode is ready.
AI Shopping “Podcasts” on Product Pages
Separately, Amazon has rolled out a feature on some product pages that plays short, podcast-like segments where two AI “hosts” discuss a specific product’s features, pros/cons, and reviews.
These mini shows are generated from the product description, user reviews, and other online information, using multiple AI technologies including Amazon Bedrock.
They appear today on selected items (especially products that “require consideration” before purchase), with a “listen to an audio overview” button under the product image.
Are there popular AI podcasts?
Current landscape
Podcast indexes and hosting platforms report a surge of AI‑generated shows, to the point where new feeds may be close to half AI‑produced in recent samples.
One analysis based on Podcast Index data found that around 39% of podcast feeds could have been produced by AI over just nine days, showing large‑scale automated production rather than a handful of hit shows.
